Large Animal Surgical Training
Personal Information
Training Information
The training at your facility includes:
- A live demonstration of the desired surgical procedure to be learned
- Hands-on practice of the desired surgical procedure
- Handling and storage procedures for the transmitters
- Cleaning and re-sterilization procedures for the transmitters
- Catheter re-gelling techniques (if applicable)
- Lead coupling techniques (if applicable)
We recommend all trainings be non-survival. During the demonstration process, sterility can be difficult to maintain and surgical procedure times may be extended therefore putting the animal at an increased risk for infections, hypothermia, mobility and respiratory issues. Any exceptions to this must be approved by DSI Surgical Services. Implantation of animals by the DSI surgeon for chronic monitoring is provided as a separate service. Please contact your Account Manager or DSI Surgical Services with questions.

To maximize your time with the DSI surgeon(s), please ensure your data collection computer and associated hardware is on and running successfully. It is helpful if the devices are configured, and pressure offsets are taken prior to surgery (only if using a device with a catheter). If you need help with any of this, please contact Technical Services at 1-800-262-9687 or email support@datasci.com.
If yes, please upload the protocol here.
Protocols may also be emailed to
surgeryteam@datasci.com, if preferred. Please ensure the body of the email includes the surgical service being performed, your customer number, and the sales order number, if known.

Please ensure that packaging materials, including boxes, are not thrown away. If you do unpack any boxes that may arrive, please be aware that UPS return labels may be present and should not be discarded or moved.
Please note that all surgical manuals and videos can be found and requested from our DSI Support Center. Please review these prior to arrival.
Note that survival surgery during surgical training is only performed as an exception and must be pre-approved by DSI Surgical Services. The purpose of surgical training is to train the staff at the facility how to perform the surgery successfully. Additional surgical services time must be purchased if the goal is to have study animals implanted in the days before or after the training.

What is your level of competency with any of the following procedures? (1 = no experience, 5 = high competency)
If you have had little to no animal handling or surgical experience, we strongly recommend extending our visit by one day. The surgical procedures you will learn will require proficient hand-eye coordination, and a basic knowledge of anatomy. Without at least some prior experience with surgical procedures, this training session may be inefficient. We value your time with us and want to maximize our visit with you. We will contact you if we feel an extra day will be beneficial.
