Rodent Training Offsite

Personal Information

Training Information
Please note, the requested date may not be available. DSI Surgical Staff will contact you to discuss further.

The training at your facility includes:

  • A live demonstration of the desired surgical procedure to be learned
  • Hands-on practice of the desired surgical procedure
  • Handling and storage procedures for the transmitters
  • Cleaning and re-sterilization procedures for the transmitters
  • Catheter re-gelling techniques (if applicable)
  • Lead coupling techniques (if applicable)

We recommend all trainings be non-survival. During the demonstration process, sterility can be difficult to maintain and surgical procedure times may be extended therefore putting the animal at an increased risk for infections, hypothermia, mobility and respiratory issues. Any exceptions to this must be approved by DSI Surgical Services.  Implantation of animals for chronic monitoring is provided as a separate service.  Please contact your Account Manager or DSI Surgical Services with questions.

Study Information

Instructional text goes here

Does the surgical microscope have illumination?

The necessity for a computer system is dependent on the surgical procedure. Please discuss this with the DSI surgeon who will be attending. If necessary, will there be a functioning telemetry system in the surgery room? Please ensure your computer system and all relevant hardware is in the surgery room prior to the first day of surgery.

To maximize your time with the DSI surgeon(s), please ensure your data collection computer and associated hardware is on and running successfully. It is helpful if the devices are configured and pressure offsets are taken prior to surgery (only if using a device with a catheter). If you need help with any of this, please contact Technical Services by email at support@datasci.com.

Can you provide DSI Surgical Services with a peri-operative protocol (including pre-operative medications, anesthetic protocol, surgical protocol, post-operative monitoring and medication)?

If yea, please upload the protocol here.
Protocols may also be emailed to surgeryteam@datasci.com, if preferred.  Please ensure the body of the email includes the surgical service being performed, your customer number, and the sales order number, if known.

Personnel Questions

Can you provide personal protective equipment? (e.g. scrubs, N95 masks, eye protection, etc.)

Can you allow DSI surgeons access to the surgical facility the day/evening prior to the training, so we can set up the necessary equipment (if needed)? If setup is needed, DSI surgeons will coordinate this with you.

Do the trainees have any other commitments that may interrupt/conflict with this training?

Do you expect any post-approval monitoring to take place during the training?

Do you expect an IACUC inspection to take place during the training?

Surgery Questions

Please take a moment to review the recommended small animal supply lists in the DSI Support Center based on the surgeries you will be performing/training. The supplies listed will be beneficial to have on-hand prior to DSI surgeon arrival and are needed for the surgeries.

May we bring and/or ship supplies to use during surgery (e.g. instruments, disposable supplies like suture, gauze, etc.)?

Please ensure that packaging materials, including boxes, are not thrown away. If you do unpack any boxes that may arrive, please be aware that UPS return labels may be present and should not be discarded or moved.

What training materials do you currently have?

What surgical materials do you currently have?

Please note that all surgical manuals and videos can be found and requested from our DSI Support Center. Please review these prior to arrival.

Note that survival surgery during surgical training is only performed as an exception and must be pre-approved by DSI Surgical Services. The purpose of surgical training is to train the staff at the facility how to perform the surgery successfully. Additional surgical services time must be purchased if the goal is to have study animals implanted in the days before or after the training.

Do you have means to mechanically ventilate animals, if needed? Certain small animal procedures may require one. This is a necessity for any intra-thoracic procedure.

Do you have a means to keep the animal warm during surgery?

Do you have experience in using a surgical microscope?

What is your level of surgical experience?

What is your level of competency with any of the following procedures? (1 = no experience, 5 = high competency)
Vessel Cannulation

Subcutaneous device placement (ports, minipumps, cannula)

Laparotomy

Thoracotomy

Craniotomy

Wound Closure

Any telemetry implantation

If you have had little to no animal handling or surgical experience, we strongly recommend extending our visit by one day. The surgical procedures you will learn may require the use of a microscope, proficient hand-eye coordination, and a basic knowledge of anatomy. Without at least some prior experience with surgical procedures, this training session may be inefficient. We value your time with us and want to maximize our visit with you. We will contact you if we feel an extra day will be beneficial.
