Metabolism and Food/Drink Intake

Metabolic phenotyping is the study of how an organism generates, stores, and utilizes energy in states of disease and health. Typical assessments include respiratory metabolism (RQ or RER) through the indirect calorimetry technique, food/drink intake analysis, and spontaneous activity. A more comprehensive understanding of an animal’s body mass phenotype is obtained by evaluating both respiratory metabolism and digestive efficiency through the analysis of urine and feces (waste collection). Measurements during forced exercise, such as treadmill running, provide additional insight into aerobic capacity (VO2max) and ability to adapt under physical challenge.
