Diaphragmatic Electromyogram Analysis Module
The Diaphragmatic EMG (dEMG) Analysis Module is used to compute respiratory parameters from EMG data acquired from the diaphragm. The analysis functions by filtering and rectifying the EMG signal and then applying a series of logical tests to the EMG data using criteria selected by the user. The graph above represents a typical dEMG signal with associated Rectified and Integrated presentation signals and the corresponding ECG signal used to remove ECG artifact. Automated validation marks for Start Inspiration and Start Expiration are displayed. The validation marks provide a visual, real-time verification of the accuracy of the system.
The list below describes the parameters calculated by the analysis module either in real-time or during subsequent analysis.
|Name || |
|Num || |
The number of the Respiration cycle. This number will appear on a primary graph page when validation marks are turned on and the cycle numbers are enabled. When running in a
logging mode other than 1 epoch, the last cycle number will be reported.
| BPM || ||
Breaths Per Minute is calculated from the time interval between Start Inspiration marks.
|TV* || |
Tidal Volume is calculated by multiplying the unscaled TV by the TV Scaling attribute.
The unscaled TV value is obtained by integrating the Rectified EMG signal between the following points: Start Inspiration of the current cycle and Start Inspiration of the following cycle.
| MV* || |
|Minute Ventilation is the product of the TV and BPM. |
| IT || ||
Inspiration Time is the time ion milliseconds between Start Inspiration and Start Expiration marks.
| TT || ||
Total Time is the time in milliseconds between Start Inspiration mark of the current cycle and Start Inspiration mark of the following cycle.
| ET || ||
Expiration Time is the time in milliseconds between Start Expiration and the following Start Inspiration marks.
| TV2* || ||
Tidal Volume is calculated by multiplying the unscaled TV2 by the user-defined TV Scaling attribute.
The unscaled TV2 value is obtained by integrating the Rectified EMG signal between the following points: Start Inspiration and Start Expiration.
| MV2* || ||
Minute Ventilation is the product of the TV2 and BPM.
: dEMG will only provide a partial representation of TV and MV, as it only accounts for diaphragmatic activity. It does not account for intercostal muscles activity or any other activity used during respiration.
