Cardiovascular Solutions from DSI

Basic Functionality

The cardiovascular system consists of the circulatory and lymphatic systems. This system is considered a vital organ system for sustaining life and is powered by the body’s hardest working organ – the heart. The heart, blood, and blood vessels make up the circulatory system; which is commonly studied by researchers.

The cardiovascular system has three main functions:
• transport blood to the body’s tissues delivering essential nutrients and oxygen and removing waste such as carbon dioxide to be processed or removed from the body
• protects the body from pathogens through white blood cells and antibodies that are carried in the blood
• helps maintain homeostatic control of several internal conditions such as maintaining body temperature

Cardiovascular functionality can be affected by many conditions associated with the cardiovascular system including, but not limited to, cardiovascular diseases such as arrhythmias and high blood pressure.

By monitoring cardiovascular measurements such as hemodynamics and biopotentials, researchers can obtain valuable information to help evaluate potential therapeutic compounds that may address, prevent or cure cardiovascular diseases.

Implantable Telemetry

DSI’s PhysioTel™ implants are designed for monitoring and collecting data from conscious, freely moving laboratory animals—providing stress-free data collection while eliminating percutaneous infections.

PhysioTel implants are offered in different sizes to support a variety of research animal models ranging from mice and rats to dogs and non-human primates. The shape of DSI implants are also designed to accommodate various surgical placements including subcutaneous and intraperitoneal locations.

DSI offers several implant models to help researchers monitor one or several physiologic signals from a single animal. The following table summarizes DSI’s implantable telemetry offerings for cardiovascular applications.

External Telemetry

External telemetry is a non-invasive method offering continuous measurement of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems using jacketed external telemetry (JET) in large animal models. Common applications for JET include toxicology and safety pharmacology studies.

Hardwired Monitoring Systems

DSI offers flexible and reliable hardwired acquisition systems that enable scientists to acquire a variety of cardiovascular parameters from research animals during acute studies.

DSI systems offer easy to use, high quality designs to obtain accurate results. A wide array of signal conditioners, amplifiers and accessories are available.

These systems are complementary to DSI’s implantable telemetry solutions, offering expanded physiologic monitoring capabilities to gain more data per research subject.

Ponemah Acquisition and Analysis Software

At the core of every physiologic monitoring system is a data acquisition and analysis platform. DSI offers complete acquisition and analysis systems designed to turn physiologic signals into useable results.

PonemahTM is compatible with all DSI monitoring solutions offering flexible, customizable acquisition interfaces. Ponemah’s modular design gives researchers the power to select analysis modules for the research performed.
DSI offers a complete solution for cardiovascular research. Each solution consists of the recommended sensors, hardware, software, and accessories for reliable, accurate data collection and analysis of data.
